The Mercedes-Benz C63 AMG sports sedan has slid sideways into the Guinness World Record books for the longest drifting sequence.

Mercedes demonstration driver Mauro Calo bettered the previous record by 400 metres, with a total drift distance of 2308 metres. The run could have continued but was cut short after a rear tyre burst.

The stunt was performed at Mercedes-Benz World in England (the dealership in Brooklands, Surrey has its own skid pan) where Calo completed 8.5 laps.

He told Autocar UK magazine: "The car was so balanced. I was relaxed and only had to make small corrections to the steering and throttle. Then the tyres let go after lap seven, but I kept on going until I knew I'd beaten the record. I'm absolutely chuffed."

Calo said his next challenge would be smashing the world blindfold speed record.

The fastest speed for a car driven by a blind person was 292.89 km/h (182.03 mph) achieved by Metin Senturk, the president of World Handicapped Foundation, who has had no vision in both eyes since the age of three. Senturk, guided over a two-way radio by a colleague in another car travelling at the same speed, was driving a Ferrari F430 at Urfa airport, Turkey, on 31 March 2010.
